Orton Pyrometric cones are used to monitor pottery and ceramic firings in kilns where consistent temperature is important to the quality of the final product being fired. Pyrometric cones measure heat work, the effect of time and temperature. Over time, kilns sometimes drift from their set point even though ‘nothing has changed.’ Pyrometric cones will let you know your ceramic firing is under control or that subtle changes are taking place within your kiln, allowing you to take corrective action before they impact your piece.
Small Cones and Bar Cones are mainly used with a Kiln Sitter. This is a mechanical device that shuts off the kiln when the temperature inside is sufficient to melt the cone and deform under the weight of the Kiln Sitter rod.
