Description
Relief printing – Woodcut
The beauty of woodcut printmaking is in working with the unique texture and grain of the wood surface which appears as part of the print. Woodcut printmaking is a European form derived from the tradition of Chinese wood engraving and Japanese Ukiyo-e, and has a uniquely distinct aesthetic. Woodcut is still widely used to produce images and patterns on paper and textiles. In this class students will learn basic tool maintenance, image transfer, proper carving techniques, inking and safe studio practices, and will come away with a small edition of prints on paper.
Melanie was raised in Montreal where she received her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Concordia University. She later earned a Master’s in Contemporary Art, Design, Craft, New Media Art Histories from OCAD University in Toronto. A commercial artist and college educator for over twenty years, she returned to a full-time studio art practice as a painter and printmaker in January 2023. She also works as a volunteer coordinator for the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum's dye garden in Blakeney, and has been exploring making pigments with botanicals.
