Relief Printmaking – Linocut
Emerging in 1911 as an art form and later adopted by Picasso, linocut printmaking is a form of relief block printing and provides a good introduction to printmaking fundamentals. It is a relatively inexpensive technique and students will find it achievable at home without overly specialized equipment.
In this 8-week class students will learn how to break down their image by through colour separation and apply reduction and multi-block carving techniques to achieve a final print. Concepts such as colour mixing and application, proofing and editioning will also be covered. This class covers relief printing fundamentals in Lino, however students with some experience will be encouraged and guided through more advanced ideas or alternative block printing surfaces such as woodcut.
Instruction includes guidelines for safe and responsible art making (both for the artist and the environment) and covers proper tool maintenance and sharpening (when applicable), and historical and contemporary practices when time permits.
Melanie has taught college art and design fundamentals for over ten years and draws upon her experience as a professional arts practitioner and educator to lead courses and workshops for all abilities.
